My family bought one and used it as our primary car for 15 years. Great car.

Had '79 Malibu Classic 4dr w/4.4(267) and factory 4spd. No a/c, but tach in dash. 300k mi when I got it. Pretty tired. In went a 350, down came an oak tree. Oh, well. Another one bites the dust.

Why did they have to be running and registered for a year if they were going to blow the engine and crush it? That doesn’t make any sense.

I learned to drive on 3 speed Malibu, but it wasn't one of these, it was a '75 with the 3 speed manual shifter on the column. The '78 Malibu was one of the only cars I can name that was available with a 3-on-the-floor shifter, almost none were sold and I don't think they were offered in the USA after about 1980, so it's no surprise that the Iraqis ended up beta-testing them. I've read that there were some Mexican-market G-bodies with inline 6 cylinder engines, which probably wouldn't have met the U.S. and Canadian crash protection standards; maybe they ran better with the lower grades of gasoline down there.

I purchased my 2022 CT5 in August 2022. Saying that my experience owning this vehicle has been a nightmare is an understatement. Here are the list of major repairs/replacements I’ve had within 2 years of owning; Engine Head Gasket, Transmission Transfer Case, entire Transmission assembly, front Seat lumbar units, steering wheel boot, interior door trim panels, O2 Sensors, and so on. All of this has been replaced within less than 2 years of owning this vehicle. I had decided to purchase my first ever car from Cadillac as the brand stood for luxury and reliability. I put my hard earned money, and that too quiet a lot of it, towards this car. If I had known what I was in for, I would’ve went for Cadillac’s competition. It’s a shame because the CT5 is a very good looking vehicle and it drives nice. However the amount of Repairs and unreliability overshadows the whole experience. Looks can be deceiving! If you’re in the market for a new luxury vehicle, I’d take a one good look at this vehicle, admire its good looks, maybe even sit in it or take some photos and then proceed to purchase a German or a Japanese competitor brand!

I had a neighbor back in Dartmouth that told me he bought one new. $5600 and said there was some $700 BS A/C tax added . This guy was kinda poor so worked perfect for him to commute around town . years later it got a low mile 305 from wrecked monte carlo.

People need to acclimate and learn how to drive better, not rely on a computer to fix all of their faults for them. This is ridiculous. No vehicles should be on the road unless occupied by a driver. People are stupid, but machines aren’t humans. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

What's interesting here is GM made us salary guys take various classes which included "Right to Know" (Safety first. Always know where to safely store your mechanical pencils and dry erase markers), business ethics (don't accept coffee from anyone, friend or foe), BDS (I'll bet that one is getting some attention these days), workplace discrimination and diversity (usually a hard fail for the kids on C crew maintenance at Saturn), and a *really* strange class that taught us that we should be suspicious of folks with a heavy middle eastern accent asking for modifications to vehicles that would allow them to operate it under a heavier load and in hot, dry, & sandy places. As a Controls Engineer I could care less how you operated your purchase, as long as you were happy with it. Basically, as long as my conveyors got it out the back door, complete & working, I was done with it. GM had an entire catalog of courses that you would have to take "à la carte", usually you had to pick a number of them, and meet or exceed the credit hours required, but the previous five were yearly and mandatory. And for my yearly development goals, it was always "World Peace" as my goal.

I ended up with one of these as part of a package deal from a car wholesaler on Vancouver Island around 1994 as a throw in to go with a really nice Cutlass 4 door of similar vintage, all for the whopping price of $600 for both of them. I sold the Cutlass right away after a few minor repairs and kept the Malibu for a driver as I thought it was kind of a weird and interesting novelty with the 3 speed stick and the car was solid and fairly clean although the gold metallic paint was faded out by then. I found out a few months later that I was driving one of the infamous Iraqui Taxis and thought it was interesting but at the time it was just a cheap used car and nothing I'd consider collectible. I wasn't really a GM guy and ended up selling it and driving an 84 Plymouth Caravelle ex-RCMP cruiser which was much more fun.

I'm happy to see a video on the Iraqibu. I used to own a 1980 El Camino with the same drivetrain, and enjoyed driving it. The 229 V6 wasn't powerful, but it was reasonably peppy, and it worked well with the 3 speed manual transmission. It was finally sold so that I could fit my 1979 Malibu wagon in the garage. An Iraqibu would have been a nice car to have had.

For a car whose design was originally conceived on the drawing board in the late 1960's, I still think that this looks drop dead gorgeous even now in 2024.
